Roy Englert, a 96-year-old retired attorney from northern Virginia’s Lake Ridge Retirement Living Community in Lake Ridge, opened the USATF National Masters Championships in Ames, Iowa, with an American record in the 95-99 age group. With a combination of walking and running, he clocked 42:30.23 on July 11, 2019, to smash the listed world recird of 50:10.56 but not a pending record of 39:42.55 set May 5, 2019, by Italy’s Antonio Nacca in the Dellomodarme meet in Novara.
